Why is there such a big disparity in women's basketball?

In the men's game it is pretty common for the number 200 team in the country to challenge or even beat a top ten team. In the ladies game that sort of upset is almost unthinkable. When was the last time a 10 seed made the ladies final four? Uconn is way better than everyone, numbers two through four are twice as good as the rest of the top 25. But why?

Perhaps there are just a lot more top end male basketball players? Maybe because more boys play sports? Or since height is important maybe there's just a lot fewer ladies that are tall and athletic then with the men?

I think this is really holding back the women's game. Also there are a lot fewer games on TV, and most of the ones that are involve the top three or four teams blowing someone out by thirty.

I was hoping you experts in ladies ball might have some opinions. Thanks.
